Brisbane plans to relocate Gabba cricket pitch to Victoria Park
Authorities have announced a plan to relocate the famous cricketing turf from Brisbane’s Gabba to the new Victoria Park stadium following the 2032 Olympic Games. The initiative aims to preserve the competitive advantage provided by the Gabba’s notorious pitch, often referred to as the ‘Gabbatoir’ due to its pace and bounce.
To facilitate this, a new tray will be installed next to the existing wicket at the Gabba in September to create a clone pitch. This pitch will be developed over the next six years before being transferred to the 63,000-seat Victoria Park venue. Queensland Premier David Crisafulli stated the goal is to ensure Australia can continue to maintain its dominance in Test cricket at the new location.
Cricket Australia has reached a deal with the state government to ensure Brisbane hosts the opening 2032-33 Ashes Test at Victoria Park. The relocation strategy is intended to provide a ready-to-use, high-quality deck immediately after the Games, helping to establish the new venue as a premier destination for summer cricket.
