Brisbane to trial AI cameras for swimmer distress detection
Brisbane City Council will trial new AI-powered cameras designed to detect swimmers in distress at public pools. The Lynxight technology uses artificial intelligence to monitor swimmers and provide immediate alerts to lifeguards if someone appears to be struggling.
The trial will be implemented at the Runcorn Aquatic Centre and Yeronga Park Memorial Pool within the coming months. Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner stated the technology is intended to act as an “extra set of eyes” to support, rather than replace, human lifeguards.
Lynxight has previously been deployed in other Australian pools through a partnership with the Royal Life Saving Society Australia. RJ Houston, the society’s chief operating officer, noted that while the AI cannot physically intervene, it serves as a valuable layer of support to address supervision gaps.
