Brisbane undergoes massive transformation ahead of Olympic Games

As Brisbane prepares to host the Olympic Games in six years, the city is undergoing significant transformation driven by massive infrastructure projects. Although the initial bid promised a frugal, sustainable era of the Olympics by utilizing existing facilities, the plans have evolved into a multi-billion dollar program.

Key developments include the construction of a new 63,000-seat Brisbane Stadium instead of renovating the traditional Gabba cricket and sports stadium. The city also faces challenges regarding a shortage of thousands of hotel beds and concerns over rowing events taking place on a river inhabited by crocodiles.

The scale of construction has sparked intense local opposition. In Victoria Park, residents and Indigenous activists have staged repeated protests to protect historical green spaces from ecological and cultural disruption. These tensions escalated in May when police cleared a protest camp, resulting in several arrests.
