Bristol Airport runway defect shuts down flights, stranding passengers
A defect discovered on Bristol Airport’s runway on the evening of Friday, 7 August, led the airport to suspend all arrivals and departures as a safety precaution. The initial closure, set to last until 23:00, was extended twice—first to 06:00 and then to at least 08:00 on Saturday—while engineers carried out emergency repairs.
Airlines including easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, TUI and KLM cancelled flights, and inbound aircraft were diverted to airports such as Cardiff, Birmingham, London Gatwick, London Southend and Newcastle. Hundreds of passengers were left stranded, with some reporting long taxi queues and fares of around £300 to reach alternative airports. Passengers criticised the lack of clear announcements, while the airport apologised and stressed that safety remained the top priority.
