Bristol bans advertising for flights, fossil fuels, and fast fashion
Bristol City Council has voted to ban advertisements for high-carbon products on council-owned advertising spaces, including billboards, digital screens, bus shelters, and print media. The new policy prohibits the promotion of fossil fuel companies, flights, airlines, airports, and cruise holidays.
Notably, Bristol’s decision marks the first time a UK city has extended such a ban to include fast-fashion campaigns and Black Friday promotions. This move joins similar initiatives in Sheffield and Edinburgh, which previously restricted high-carbon advertising to encourage climate-friendly behavior.
The restrictions also target specific vehicle types, including petrol, diesel, and hybrid cars, as well as all SUV models. While some council members expressed concern regarding the scope of the ban, supporters stated the measure is essential for reaching net-zero targets by shifting societal perceptions of consumption.
