Bristol community protests AI-generated mural

An AI-designed vinyl mural installed on the Jolly Colliers Pub in Bedminster, Bristol, has drawn significant criticism from the local arts community. The artwork, which features inaccuracies regarding local landmarks like Cabot Tower and the SS Great Britain, has been labeled as disrespectful by local activists.

Caroline Maggs of the Bristol Mural Collective stated that AI designs “devalue but undermine the work of artists,” arguing that the choice to use artificial intelligence over human-made art is a political decision that impacts the livelihoods of local creators. The mural also contains a flawed interpretation of Banksy’s 1999 piece, ‘Mild Mild West.’
