Bristol protests lead to arrests and use of new face-covering laws

Ten people were arrested following anti-immigration and counter-protests in Bristol city centre. Police reported that approximately 150 anti-immigration protesters and 300 counter-protesters participated in the demonstrations, which moved through Queen’s Square, Bristol Bridge, and ended at the Cenotaph.

Superintendent Karen Corrigan of the Avon and Somerset Police noted "pockets of disorder, especially at the Cenotaph," where counter-protesters attempted to breach police lines. The operation involved roughly 300 officers, supported by personnel from 10 different forces, including a mounted unit.

The arrests included six individuals suspected of concealing their identities, marking a first-time application of new face-covering laws under the Crime and Policing Act 2026. Under these rules, officers can mandate the removal of face coverings in designated zones to prevent the concealment of identity during criminal activity.

Other reported offenses included assault by beating, assaulting an emergency worker, obstructing a public highway, and using threatening or abusive behavior. The protests caused significant disruption to city center traffic and access to local venues.
