Britain and Israel face diplomatic rift over settlements and arms ties

Diplomatic relations between Britain and Israel are facing significant strain following disagreements over settlement construction and the deep integration of the Israeli arms industry within the British military.

A dispute has emerged regarding a private phone call between British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband and Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar. British officials reportedly believed Sa’ar signaled that no construction tenders would be opened in the E1 area before Israel’s October elections. However, Israel subsequently published tenders for approximately 1,200 housing units, leading Britain to implement measures targeting Israeli communities in Yehuda and Shomron.

Simultaneously, the entanglement between the Israeli defense sector and the UK Ministry of Defence remains extensive. Despite Britain’s recent stance that the Israeli occupation is unlawful—aligning with a 2024 International Court of Justice advisory opinion—Israeli firms continue to hold major contracts. Elbit Systems recently facilitated a large-scale training exercise for over 300 British soldiers, and Israeli technology is utilized in British air defense systems, missiles, and Royal Navy anti-missile systems.
