British Airways flight declares emergency after rapid descent over Ireland

A British Airways Boeing 777 flight, BA295, traveling from London Heathrow to Chicago O’Hare, declared an emergency and performed a rapid descent over Irish airspace on Monday, October 5, 2026. Flight-tracking data indicated the aircraft dropped approximately 27,000 to 28,000 feet, descending from a cruising altitude of roughly 36,000–37,000 feet to approximately 9,000 feet within seven minutes.

The crew transmitted the 7700 emergency transponder code, and passenger oxygen masks were deployed during the descent. While some reports suggested a potential cabin depressurization, British Airways attributed the diversion to a “technical issue” and has not confirmed the specific cause.

Following the descent, the aircraft circled for several hours, including time spent over the Bristol Channel, likely to reduce fuel weight before landing. The flight eventually returned to London Heathrow and landed safely approximately five hours after departure. All passengers disembarked normally, and the airline stated it is working to assist travelers with their revised plans.
