British Airways resumes direct flights to Sri Lanka
British Airways has resumed flight operations to Sri Lanka after an 11-year hiatus, establishing a direct connection between London Gatwick and Colombo. The service, which operates three times weekly throughout the winter season, marks a significant expansion in the airline's winter network.
David Wright, General Manager for South Asia at British Airways, cited Sri Lanka's post-pandemic economic growth and increasing tourist arrivals as key drivers for the return. Unlike previous operations that routed through the Maldives, these new services will be direct. The airline is also facilitating cargo transportation to support local exporters, such as the apparel industry, in reaching European markets.
To mark the resumption, the airline has introduced special discounted fares. Local partners, including Hayleys Advantis, noted that the return of the carrier is expected to attract high-spending tourists and strengthen the national tourism industry.
