British Cave Explorers Continue Research in Vietnam's Phong Nha‑Ke Bang

British speleologists from the British Cave Research Association have been surveying the karst landscape of Phong Nha‑Ke Bang National Park for more than three decades. Their work began in 1990 with joint expeditions alongside Vietnamese scientists, helping secure UNESCO World Heritage status for the site in 2003. The team’s most notable discovery was the Son Doong cave in 2009, now recognised as one of the world’s largest. In early 2026 the explorers mapped the largely untouched Cha Ngheo vertical cave and plan a follow‑up survey in March 2027. Dr. Howard Limbert recalled why they keep returning, saying, “The caves here have kept my wife and me coming back ever since.” Continued cooperation is expected to boost scientific knowledge and sustainable tourism in the region.
