British Chess Championship 2026 records historic entries as esports boost popularity

The 2026 British Chess Championships are being held at the University of Warwick in Coventry from 1 to 9 August. Organised by the English Chess Federation, the tournament expects more than 1,750 participants, making it the largest edition in the event’s 122‑year history.

Growth is attributed to the rise of online chess platforms such as Chess.com and Lichess and the adoption of esports‑style broadcasting. Live commentary, player cameras, and short‑format blitz and bullet games have attracted a broader, younger audience and increased commercial sponsorship, exemplified by Magnus Carlsen’s partnership with Team Liquid. The championship also features the biggest prize fund ever offered and an expanded programme that includes a focus on women’s chess.

These developments illustrate how digital competition and streaming are reshaping traditional mind sports in the United Kingdom.
