British citizen detained in Montenegro after vehicle standoff
Police in Herceg Novi, Montenegro, stopped a British driver for a traffic violation late at night. The driver offered money to avoid a citation and, after being warned that bribery is a crime, locked himself inside his vehicle with his wife and two minor children. Officers negotiated with the suspect, using an Albanian interpreter, and the man voluntarily opened the doors and surrendered around 04:00 without force. The state prosecutor in Kotor ordered his detention on suspicion of bribery, and he was held for up to 72 hours.
The incident highlights Montenegro’s enforcement of anti‑corruption laws and the careful handling of a situation involving minors.
