British Columbia agricultural sector faces $457 million net loss

A new report from the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV), commissioned by the BC Agriculture Council and BC Dairy, provides a detailed breakdown of the British Columbia agricultural sector's financial status in 2024.

While Statistics Canada reported a total net loss of approximately $457 million for the province's agricultural sector, the UFV study suggests this figure is heavily driven by “sub-commercial operations.” These are farms generating less than $100,000 in annual operating revenue, a category that includes 74.4 per cent of B.C. farms. Notably, over 40 per cent of these farms earned less than $10,000 in 2024.

In contrast, the remaining 25.6 per cent of the sector, consisting of 4,100 commercial operations, generated roughly $770 million in net operating income, reflecting a 13.2 per cent profitability rate. UFV assistant professor Chris Bodnar noted that aggregate statistics can mask the performance of commercial farms, which remain productive despite the sector's overall lack of financial resilience compared to other Canadian provinces.
