British Columbia air quality warnings issued due to wildfire smoke

Environment Canada has issued orange and yellow air quality warnings across multiple regions in British Columbia due to persistent wildfire smoke. Orange warnings, indicating conditions expected to last longer than 48 hours, are in effect for 100 Mile House, the Eastern Fraser Valley from Abbotsford to Hope, and the South Okanagan from Summerland to the United States border.

Yellow air quality warnings cover several other areas, including the Central and North Okanagan, Shuswap, Arrow Lakes, South Thompson, Nicola, Similkameen, Manning, Fraser Canyon, North Harrison Lake, Whistler, Howe Sound, and Chilcotin. Other regions under yellow warnings include Kelowna, Kamloops, Merritt, Ashcroft, Princeton, and Nakusp.

Localized smoke impacts are expected downwind of the Brunswick Creek, Ainslie Creek, and Bald Range fires. While Environment Canada noted that cooler and wetter conditions have led to clearing in some parts of the Central and Southern Interior, residents in affected areas are advised to take precautions. Health officials recommend avoiding strenuous outdoor activities and staying indoors in spaces with cleaner air, particularly for vulnerable populations such as children, seniors, and individuals with heart or lung conditions.
