British Columbia caps 2027 rent increases at 2.2 per cent

The British Columbia government has announced that the maximum allowable rent increase for 2027 will be capped at 2.2 per cent. Effective January 1, 2027, this rate is tied to projected inflation and is slightly lower than the 2.3 per cent cap set for 2026.

The cap applies to manufactured home park tenancies, which may also include proportional increases for changes in local government levies and regulated utility fees. However, the limit does not apply to commercial tenancies, co-operative housing, non-profit housing where rent is geared to income, or certain assisted-living facilities.

Housing Minister Christine Boyle stated that linking increases to inflation helps renters manage housing expenses while ensuring landlords can maintain stable homes. The province noted that this marks the seventh consecutive year that the maximum allowable increase has been capped at or below inflation levels.
