British Columbia off-road groups urge riding postponement due to fire risk

The Quad Riders ATV Association of British Columbia (ATVBC) has recommended that its members postpone off-road riding due to extreme drought, high temperatures, and widespread forest fires across the province. The organization warned that human activity, specifically ATVs which can spark from rocks, metal, or hot exhaust systems, increases the risk of catastrophic wildfires.

Potential dangers to riders include poor air quality, reduced visibility from smoke, extreme heat, and dehydration. Additionally, trails may face sudden closures for safety.

The Four Wheel Drive Association of BC (4WDABC) issued a separate statement, advising members to consult local fire dangers and carry essential safety gear such as water, shovels, and fire extinguishers. While ATVBC urged postponement, 4WDABC stated that the decision to enter the backcountry rests with the individuals, noting they will defer to government authorities regarding lawful area closures.
