British Columbia colleges partner for mental health training

Selkirk College, North Island College, and Northern Lights College have launched a partnership to expand the Mental Health and Substance Use Training (MHSU) Program across British Columbia. The initiative uses a distributed delivery model designed to strengthen the healthcare and human services workforce, particularly in rural areas such as the Interior, Vancouver Island, and the North.

Under this model, students complete theoretical coursework online through Selkirk College and then participate in a five-week practicum coordinated by their local college within their own communities. This approach aims to build local workforce capacity and provide students with regional professional connections.

The first cohort is set to begin in January 2027. By mid-May of that year, graduates will be prepared for roles in mental health, addictions support, community support, and life skills outreach. The program comes as the Government of British Columbia estimates that one in five residents will be affected by mental health or substance use challenges in 2026.
