On July 22 a transport truck traveling on Highway 97 northwest of Coal River, just south of the British Columbia‑Yukon border, collided with a bison and overturned. The truck was carrying diesel, and officials initially warned that up to 50,000 litres could enter a nearby waterway. By July 27 the truck’s lead trailer and pup trailer were removed; the lead trailer is assumed to have emptied its contents, while the pup trailer retained an undetermined amount of fuel.

British Columbia’s Environment and Parks Ministry is overseeing the response. Soil and water samples have been taken, and biologists are on site. Cleanup work has moved into a forested area where diesel pooled, and crews have dug a trench to protect the waterway. A July 29 update said the diesel appears contained within the current recovery area, with no impacts observed beyond the trench.
