British Columbia declares state of emergency amid massive wildfires FAST-MOVING
British Columbia has declared a provincial state of emergency as wildfire activity intensifies, forcing more than 20,000 residents to evacuate. The Bald Range wildfire, located between Peachland and Penticton, is currently classified as ‘out of control’ and has grown to over 15,590 hectares. The blaze has resulted in at least one fatality and significant property damage.
Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Kelly Greene visited the Okanagan region to meet with local leaders, including Okanagan Indian Band Chief Dan Wilson. Greene highlighted the availability of Disaster Psychosocial Support staff, referred to as ‘purple shirts’, in reception centres to assist with mental health needs. The ministry is also focusing on long-term climate resilience through initiatives like FireSmart, prescribed burns, and forest thinning.
To assist with the emergency response, approximately 100 firefighters from Mexico are expected to arrive to support local crews. The province is also working to secure additional lodging for the thousands of evacuees displaced by the ongoing fires.
