British Columbia Premier David Eby has called a snap provincial election for October 24, 2026. The decision comes two years ahead of the scheduled 2028 election and follows the recent resignation of BC Conservative leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay. Eby justified the early vote by citing the need for a stronger mandate to protect the province from economic pressures and sovereignty threats posed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

The BC Conservative Party has appointed Lorne Doerkson as interim leader following a unanimous caucus vote. The party board announced it intends to amend its constitution so that Doerkson can remain leader if he is elected premier, avoiding a new leadership race.

In a separate policy move, Eby announced new 'Built in B.C. and Canada' procurement rules. These legislative requirements will mandate that government agencies, including ministries, Crown corporations, and health authorities, prioritize Canadian suppliers for public infrastructure projects when they are within a competitive bid range of American competitors.
