British Columbia election candidates debate childcare and wealth tax
During the British Columbia election campaign, political parties are focusing on childcare and economic policies. The BC Conservatives have criticized Premier David Eby, noting that his family utilizes the $10-a-day subsidized childcare program. Conservative candidate Margareta Dovgal characterized the situation as unacceptable, arguing that Eby secured a spot while many other families remain on waitlists. Eby confirmed his family uses the program at a YMCA but stated his party is committed to expanding childcare, specifically targeting before- and after-school care.
The BC NDP has responded by highlighting past comments from Conservative candidate Heather Maahs regarding childcare models and noting that NDP initiatives have reduced average fees by approximately 50 percent.
Separately, the BC Green Party has received support from economist Emmanuel Saez for its proposed wealth tax. Saez, an expert involved in California’s billionaire tax proposal, stated that the Greens' plan possesses the correct structure.
