British Columbia election leaders clash over insurance and healthcare

As the British Columbia provincial election approaches on October 24, political leaders are clashing over key policy platforms. BC Conservative Leader Lorne Doerkson has signaled a plan to replace the current ICBC no-fault insurance system with a hybrid model. This proposal includes the possibility of opening auto insurance to private competition and implementing limits on legal costs for lawyers.

BC NDP Leader David Eby has focused his campaign on affordability and healthcare. Eby has acknowledged that surgical wait times in the province are a significant issue, noting that some patients face waits of 50 weeks or more. To support the economy, the NDP has proposed interest-free loans of up to $1 million for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as a $5,000 refundable tax credit for businesses employing workers aged 18 to 30.

Regarding emergency management, Eby highlighted improvements in wildfire response, including the year-round operation of the fire service and a doubled night fleet of helicopters.
