David Eby proposes grocery and fuel price protections in B.C
British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby has announced a series of economic relief measures as part of the campaign for the 2026 provincial election. A central proposal is a “price guard” on grocery essentials, which would cap profit margins for major retailers on items such as milk, eggs, cheese, butter, and poultry. Eby stated the goal is to protect families from excessive profits and support independent grocers.
Additionally, Eby proposed relief for fuel costs, including a temporary 10-cent per litre reduction in the provincial motor fuel tax for gasoline and diesel, alongside a permanent “price guard” to regulate pump prices. He suggested that if re-elected, the government would ask the B.C. Utilities Commission to set maximum fuel prices based on weekly crude oil fluctuations.
These proposals have faced criticism from B.C. Conservative interim leader Lorne Doerkson, who questioned Eby’s ability to deliver on financial promises made during previous elections.
