British Columbia strengthens consumer protection with new contract rules

British Columbia’s Business Practices and Consumer Protection Act was amended and took effect on August 1, 2026. The changes, announced by Attorney General Niki Sharma, introduce rules that require advance notice before automatic renewal of subscription contracts and allow consumers to cancel renewals at any time without penalty. The province also bans high‑pressure door‑to‑door sales of certain high‑cost household products and prohibits offering credit as part of a direct sale, aiming to curb predatory practices.

The reforms are intended to modernize consumer‑rights legislation, improve transparency in subscription services such as internet, mobile, streaming and food‑delivery plans, and help residents make more informed financial decisions. Additional amendments to Bill 28 are slated to come into force in August 2027.
