British Columbia entities advance forest and tree protection initiatives

In British Columbia, local government and industry are advancing environmental management initiatives. The town of Ladysmith has begun a process to develop its first dedicated Tree Protection Bylaw. The proposed 10-month development period will include research into other B.C. municipalities, consultation with the Stz’uminus First Nation, and engagement with residents, developers, and arborists. The bylaw aims to balance ecosystem protection and climate resilience with the rights of property owners to manage their land.

In the Williams Lake region, West Fraser and the Stswecem’c Xget’tem First Nation (SXFN) are collaborating on forest stewardship. The partnership focuses on integrating Indigenous knowledge with forestry science to manage local ecosystems. A recent outcome of this collaboration includes a harvest plan for an area above Canoe Creek, which incorporated SXFN values and knowledge to address the specific characteristics of the Interior Douglas-fir forest.
