British Columbia expands training leave for military reservists
Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) leaders and provincial representatives announced an expansion of training leave for military reservists in Victoria. The new policy allows reservists to take a combined leave of up to 24 months within a 60-month period to support training and operational readiness.
This replaces the previous entitlement, which was limited to a maximum of 20 days annually. The expansion aims to improve recruitment and protect the civilian jobs of reservists. Notably, deployments within Canada for national emergencies, such as wildfire responses, will remain exempt from the 24-month limit.
British Columbia is home to approximately 3,000 reservists. BGen. Paul Ursich, deputy commander of the 3rd Canadian Division, noted that the flexibility of the Reserve Force is a key strength, as members hold diverse civilian roles including healthcare, education, and trades.
