British Columbia Extends Temporary World Cup Patio Licences to Labour Day

The provincial government announced on July 6, 2026 that businesses with temporary outdoor patios approved for the FIFA World Cup may apply to keep the permits in place until Labour Day (September 6). The extension is intended to help restaurants, pubs and other hospitality venues maintain revenue and staffing levels during the peak summer tourism season, provide more outdoor dining and gathering space, and boost the visitor experience across the province. Agriculture and Food Minister Lana Popham said the hospitality sector “stepped up in a big way” during the tournament, and the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch will coordinate with local municipalities to process the extensions quickly. Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim noted that the city council has already prolonged the Granville Street pedestrian zone and its temporary patios, citing increased customer traffic and community enthusiasm. The move aims to give businesses certainty, support jobs and gather data for the long‑term vision of the area’s public spaces.
