British Columbia glaciers face extinction due to climate change
A study from Simon Fraser University, published in the journal Annals of Glaciology, indicates that three glaciers in southwest British Columbia are facing extinction due to climate change.
The Whistler Glacier is in the most critical state and may disappear within the next decade, having already shrunk by 95 per cent over the last 50 years. The research shows the glacier has fractured into three smaller ice masses.
Additionally, the Horstman and Blackcomb glaciers have lost up to 75 per cent of their area over the same 50-year period. These glaciers are projected to melt within three to seven decades. Lead researcher Chloé Monty noted that while these specific glaciers cannot be saved, reducing carbon emissions could protect larger glaciers across Canada and the world.
