British Columbia interior faces wildfire smoke and air quality warnings

Wildfire smoke continues to impact air quality across much of British Columbia's interior, with orange and yellow air quality warnings in effect for the Okanagan, Kootenays, and Thompson areas. Smoke from the Brunswick complex fires in the Fraser Canyon and the Bald Range fire near Summerland has contributed to extreme air quality readings in parts of the Central Okanagan.

Environment Canada meteorologists indicate that while unstable air and potential thunderstorms may provide some relief by pushing smoke out of the valleys later this week, the weather presents its own risks. Thunderstorms could bring gusty winds and lightning, which the BC Wildfire Service warns could lead to new lightning-caused wildfire starts.

Health officials advise residents, particularly vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions, to stay indoors and avoid strenuous outdoor activities. While temperatures are expected to cool slightly in the short term, seasonal forecasts suggest warmer and drier conditions may persist through the coming months.
