British Columbia issues summer safety guide for dogs

As daylight lengthens and temperatures rise, British Columbia residents are encouraged to take extra precautions when enjoying outdoor activities with their dogs. The guide advises owners to keep dogs on leashes or use long lines in shared spaces, stay calm and use treats or an air‑horn if an unfamiliar dog approaches, and regularly check for ticks after walks in wooded or grassy areas.

Wildlife encounters are also highlighted; dogs with a strong prey drive should be recalled promptly and owners should make noise to avoid startling animals. Vehicle safety is stressed – it is illegal in BC to transport a dog unsecured in the open bed of a pickup truck, and the safest option is to keep the animal inside the cab or in a properly secured crate. For water‑based outings, a fitted canine life jacket is recommended. The advice aims to help owners keep their pets safe and comfortable throughout the summer season.
