British Columbia committee recommends scrapping PST expansion

A legislative committee in British Columbia has recommended that the provincial government abandon a planned expansion of the provincial sales tax (PST). The Select Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services made this recommendation following consultations with various business and interest groups.

The proposed tax expansion, which was part of the February budget, aims to apply PST to professional services including engineering, architectural, and accounting services. If implemented on October 1, the change is expected to generate approximately $500 million annually. Business groups expressed concerns that the tax would increase costs for consumers.

While the committee, which includes members of the governing NDP, recommended scrapping the scheme, Finance Minister Brenda Bailey stated the government has no intention of backing down. The ministry maintains that the expansion aligns with tax models in other provinces and is necessary to address mounting deficits.
