British Columbia municipalities address housing plans and manufactured home protections

In White Rock, British Columbia, the Official Community Plan (OCP) may be moving toward adoption following a revised bylaw. A special council meeting scheduled for August 31 will consider first and second readings of the revised plan. The revisions follow public opposition to increased density in the North Bluff area. A report from planning and development services director Wayne Berg suggests the updated bylaw can reconcile previous drafts and streamline the referral process to authorities like Metro Vancouver. The report also notes that the Local Government Act does not mandate specific modeling assumptions regarding land redevelopment, supporting the capacity to meet 20-year housing needs.

Separately, delegates at the Union of British Columbia Municipalities convention in Vancouver will vote on a resolution from Sooke. The proposal urges the province to strengthen protections for manufactured home owners during park closures and redevelopments. The resolution seeks standardized provincial rules for fair compensation and relocation assistance, addressing vulnerabilities faced by residents who own their structures but rent the land. British Columbia currently has approximately 900 manufactured home communities serving 65,000 residents.
