British Columbia municipalities advance community and recreation projects

Municipalities in British Columbia are advancing significant recreation and community development initiatives. In Nanaimo, the city council has endorsed the ‘Nanaimo Accord,’ a framework designed to align the strategic priorities of major local institutions, including the Snuneymuxw First Nation, Nanaimo Port Authority, and Vancouver Island University, to attract investment and foster a shared community vision.

Nanaimo is also investing millions into its recreational infrastructure. This includes schematic designs for a new south end urban community centre and multi-million dollar upgrades to existing facilities, such as the Beban Park Complex and the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre. Projects include roof renewals, HVAC improvements, and the creation of the Nikkei Outdoor Performance Space.

In Maple Ridge, the city has launched an educational campaign regarding three major proposed recreation projects: the Hammond Aquatics and Recreation Centre, the Hammond Multi-Use Community Park, and an expansion of the Albion Twin-Rink Arena. Residents will vote on whether to support long-term borrowing for these projects during the October 17 municipal election.
