British Columbia names SkyTrain extension after former Premier Dave Barrett
The British Columbia provincial government has named the Surrey Langley SkyTrain extension the ‘Dave Barrett Extension’ to honor the late former premier. Barrett, who served as the province’s first NDP premier from 1972 to 1975, was recognized for his contributions to public service and his efforts to expand transit services in regions such as Surrey, Delta, White Rock, and Langley.
The 16-kilometre project will extend the rapid transit system from King George Station in Surrey to the new Langley City Centre Station. The expansion will include eight new stations and is designed to improve access to housing, education, and employment for communities south of the Fraser River.
The $6 billion transit project is currently 60 per cent complete, with construction remaining on schedule. The extension is expected to open to passengers in late 2029.
