British Columbia officials manage wildfire recovery and timber salvage debate

British Columbia officials are addressing the aftermath of the 2026 wildfire season, highlighted by the Pear Lake fire which has burned 161,000 hectares since late July. Kelly Greene, the Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness, visited South Cariboo communities to meet with local mayors and regional district chairs to assess structural losses and the psychological impact on residents.

Simultaneously, a political debate has emerged regarding the salvage rate of burned timber. B.C. Conservative Party MLA Ward Stamer has criticized the province for moving too slowly, proposing an increase in the current 5 per cent salvage rate to 25 per cent by better utilizing existing infrastructure. Forestry Minister Ravi Parmar has rejected this target as unrealistic, citing significant challenges regarding safety, access, and operability in wildfire-impacted areas.
