BC Premier David Eby rejects U.S. liquor on provincial shelves amid tariff dispute

Premier David Eby said there is “not a chance in hell” that U.S. alcohol will return to British Columbia Liquor Store shelves, emphasizing strong public support. He made the remarks in Charlottetown during the Council of the Federation meeting, after the White House announced a 50 % tariff on Canadian products, including alcohol.

A White House fact sheet noted that only British Columbia and Ontario have stopped the purchase, distribution and sale of U.S. alcoholic beverages in government stores. The province ordered the removal of all American beer, wine, spirits and refreshment drinks from its stores in March 2025. Eby linked the policy to the tariff dispute, calling U.S. President Donald Trump “a bully” and saying the move will protect families, the wood‑manufacturing sector and the provincial economy. He added that the federal government has not asked him to reverse the decision and that he is willing to discuss the issue with other premiers and Prime Minister Mark Carney.
