British Columbia air quality warnings expand due to wildfire smoke
Wildfire smoke has triggered widespread air quality warnings across multiple regions in British Columbia. Environment Canada has issued orange-coded warnings for the South Okanagan, including areas from Summerland to Osoyoos, as well as Highway 1 from Yale to Lytton and Highway 3 from Hope to Eastgate. Other regions, including Princeton, Merritt, Ashcroft, Kamloops, and the Kootenay region, are under yellow-coded warnings.
In the Fraser Valley, the Metro Vancouver Regional District issued an orange warning for Chilliwack, Agassiz, and Hope due to high fine particulate matter. In Chilliwack, the air quality health index reached a level described as “very high risk.”
The BC Wildfire Service reports 124 active wildfires across the province. The ongoing smoke and extreme fire risk have led to several community disruptions. Butchart Gardens has cancelled its weekend fireworks show for the second consecutive week due to the provincial state of emergency. Additionally, the KGH Foundation has postponed the JoeAnna’s House Family Picnic in Kelowna to prioritize community health and wellbeing.
