The British Columbia government has disclosed a $1.5 billion accounting error regarding natural gas royalties. Officials attributed the blunder to a human error involving a spreadsheet mistake, where Canadian dollars were incorrectly treated as American dollars during currency conversion.

Energy and Climate Solutions Minister Adrian Dix stated the error led to an overstatement of revenue. As a result, provincial revenues must be reduced by approximately $300 million annually for the next four years, with a total correction of roughly $1.462 billion.

The error was previously brought to the attention of Premier David Eby via a July letter from the Treaty 8 First Nations. While the government cites currency conversion as the cause, the Treaty 8 First Nations had previously alleged the error stemmed from a failure to account for transportation costs. The group also expressed concerns regarding upcoming royalty changes scheduled for January 1, 2027.
