British Columbia reports rise in accidental drowning deaths
British Columbia is experiencing a significant increase in accidental drowning deaths this summer. Data from the BC Coroners Service indicates 40 accidental drownings occurred between May 1 and July 16, a notable rise from the 26 deaths recorded during the same period last year.
Okanagan Lake has been identified as the deadliest lake in the province, accounting for six drowning-related incidents. Recent tragedies include the death of a 13-year-old girl at Cultus Lake following a medical emergency while paddleboarding without a life jacket.
Health officials and the RCMP are issuing urgent public safety reminders. BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) reports that alcohol or drugs were factors in 40 percent of drownings over the last decade. Experts recommend wearing properly fitted personal flotation devices, supervising children closely, and avoiding alcohol during water activities to mitigate risks.
