British Columbia rescue of charter boat survivors highlights life‑jacket safety
A fishing charter boat sank in the Strait of Georgia near Vancouver, leaving six people missing and several survivors in cold water. Married sailors Brian Angus and Dorothy Stauffer, sailing their 33‑foot yacht Malaika from Coal Harbour, rescued four people after an 18‑minute effort that involved pulling survivors into an inflatable dinghy. The rescued individuals were hypothermic after less than an hour in the water; two were taken to hospital in critical condition and later released. A fourth survivor was also recovered by a Coast Guard hovercraft.
Police and the Transportation Safety Board launched investigations to determine the cause of the sinking and to identify the missing crew members. Authorities emphasized the importance of wearing life‑jackets, noting that none of the rescued persons had one. The incident has prompted calls for stricter safety checks on charter vessels and for passengers to verify that operators are properly licensed.
