British Columbia road safety advisory on speed limits

DriveSmartBC has issued an advisory stating that posted speed limits do not guarantee safe driving conditions. Under Section 144(1)(c) of British Columbia’s Motor Vehicle Act, driving at a speed that is excessive relative to road, traffic, visibility, or weather conditions is prohibited.

Drivers are urged to adjust their speed based on several factors:

• Road conditions: Sharp curves, steep hills, narrow roadways, or uneven surfaces may require slower speeds to maintain control. • Traffic conditions: Heavy congestion or roadside activity requires drivers to adjust speed and increase following distances. • Visibility: Fog, heavy rain, snow, darkness, and glare can limit reaction time. Drivers must be able to respond to hazards within the distance they can see. • Weather: Rain, snow, and ice can reduce traction and make braking difficult, particularly on bridges or shaded roads.
