British Columbia to see first August rain and cooler temperatures

A shift in weather patterns is expected to bring cooler temperatures and the first rainfall of August to much of southern British Columbia this weekend. A high-pressure ridge is moving toward the Prairies, which will cause interior temperatures to drop by more than 10°C and the Lower Mainland to see a decrease of 5–7°C.

A coastal low-pressure system is forecast to track northward, bringing widespread thunderstorms and potential downpours. While the rain may provide relief to drought-stricken areas, there is a risk of severe weather, including strong winds and large hail, particularly in the southern Interior. Additionally, dry lightning east of the Coastal Mountains could increase wildfire risks.

Rainfall totals are expected to be modest, with estimates around 10–15 mm for Vancouver, 5 mm for Victoria and Kelowna, and 5–10 mm for Kamloops. Many communities have experienced an exceptionally dry summer, with Victoria recording only 0.3 mm of rain since the start of August.
