British Columbia reports doubling of fatal train strikes in 2026
Fatal train-related incidents have more than doubled in British Columbia during the first eight months of 2026. According to the BC Coroners Service, 13 people were unintentionally killed by trains between January 1 and August 30, compared to six deaths during the same period in 2025. More than half of these incidents occurred in the Lower Mainland, including a recent fatality in Mission on September 17.
The spike in fatalities is also reflected at the national level. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada reported 71 train-related deaths in 2025. By the end of July 2026, Canada had already recorded 42 deaths, which is seven more than the total recorded by this time in 2025.
To mark Rail Safety Week, Transportation and Transit Minister Mike Farnworth emphasized that rail safety is a communal responsibility, urging pedestrians and drivers to remain alert at crossings. CN chief of police Shawn Will also called for increased caution around all railway tracks and crossings.
