British Columbia wildfires halted by drone interference

The Brunswick Complex wildfire in the Fraser Canyon near Boston Bar is burning roughly 19,000 hectares across the Brunswick Creek and Ainslie Creek fires. On July 11, a drone was observed near the southeast flank of the Brunswick Creek fire while multiple airtankers and helicopters were operating, forcing all aerial firefighting to be temporarily suspended for safety.

BC Wildfire Service issued an advisory warning that drones are prohibited within five nautical miles and up to 3,000 ft of a wildfire. Violations can carry fines up to $25,000 and up to 18 months imprisonment, while intentional interference with suppression efforts may attract fines up to $100,000. The agency also cautioned against drivers speeding or stopping on Highway 1 to film the fire, noting that such behaviour endangers responders.

The service reported that cooler weather briefly slowed the fire’s growth, but forecasts predict hotter, drier conditions that could intensify activity. About 260 properties remain under evacuation orders, and Highway 1 stays partially closed with lane restrictions. Residents are urged to obey speed limits, avoid stopping in the fire zone, and report any drones immediately.
