British Columbia wildfires force 20,000 evacuations FAST-MOVING

British Columbia is facing a severe wildfire season, with over 100 fires burning across the province and more than 20,000 people forced to evacuate. One fatality has been reported this year. Structural damage is significant, with over 500 homes and buildings destroyed or damaged, including major losses in the Okanagan region.

In the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD), officials have warned of a “dramatic increase” in fire activity due to an incoming weather system bringing unstable winds and potential lightning. Current evacuation orders affect approximately 118 properties due to the Ainslie Creek wildfire, 80 properties due to the Pear Lake wildfire, and 10 properties due to the French Bar Creek wildfire. Additionally, over 2,300 properties remain on evacuation alert.

A massive wildfire west of Merritt has grown to more than 67,000 hectares, presenting a major test for containment efforts as temperatures rise and winds shift. The ongoing environmental crisis is also impacting food security and affordability due to drought and agricultural disruptions.
