Ainslie Creek wildfire threatens Highways 5 and 8

The Ainslie Creek wildfire, part of the Brunswick Complex, is burning towards Highway 8 on its northeast flank and Highway 5 on its southeast flank. The fire, which was discovered near Highway 1 in the Fraser Canyon on July 4, is estimated to cover approximately 61,399 hectares.

New evacuation orders and alerts have been issued. The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) placed 118 properties in Electoral Area N on evacuation alert. In total, approximately 840 addressed properties across Electoral Areas I, M, and N are under evacuation alerts. Additionally, the Lower Nicola Indian Band issued an evacuation order for Speous IR 8, and the Cook’s Ferry Band issued an evacuation alert for IR 7 and IR 21.

BC Wildfire Service has deployed an incident command team including 236 personnel, 19 helicopters, 59 pieces of heavy equipment, and 76 structure protection personnel. While the fire is active, officials state there is currently no imminent threat to Merritt or Highway 5.
