British Columbia wildfires force Peter Maffay to end family vacation
German musician Peter Maffay and his family have cut their vacation in Canada short due to devastating wildfires in British Columbia. Maffay’s wife, Hendrikje Balsmeyer, announced the decision on Instagram, stating that they could not continue their holiday while people were losing their livelihoods.
The province of British Columbia declared a state of emergency on August 8 following the rapid spread of several fires. In southwestern Canada, more than 20,000 people have been forced to evacuate. The Summerland region near Okanagan Lake has been particularly hard hit, with fires spreading across an area of nearly 140 square kilometers. High temperatures, heavy smoke, and ongoing drought conditions are currently complicating firefighting efforts.
