British Columbia wildlife experts urge residents to protect local bat populations
The BC Community Bat Program’s North Island chapter is advising residents to avoid touching bats and to give roosting animals space. Program coordinator Heather Thomson noted that bats are essential to the ecosystem for controlling insect populations. There are at least 15 bat species in British Columbia, and they are protected under the BC Wildlife Act.
In a separate success for local wildlife, the BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre successfully treated a California myotis that had become stuck in a glue trap. After receiving intensive care, including mineral oil baths and hand-feeding, the bat was released back into the wild on Salt Spring Island in July.
