British Columbia Wills Registry investigation guide
Individuals seeking information regarding a deceased person's estate can utilize public tools to investigate estate proceedings and real estate ownership. In British Columbia, the Vital Statistics Agency maintains the Wills Registry.
To conduct a search, an individual must possess a death certificate. A search of the registry for ‘Wills Notices’ can reveal the name of the will-maker, the date of the will, and the location where the document is stored, such as a law firm. However, the actual will is not deposited in the registry.
While searching the registry can provide helpful clues, it may not offer a complete picture of an estate plan. A registered will might have been revoked, or a newer version may exist that was never registered. Additionally, some wealth may pass outside the reach of a will.
